Zero waste for beginners

New to zero waste and don’t know where to begin? This post is for you.

What is zero waste?

Zero waste is an international movement and the aim of zero waste is to send no waste to landfill.

The goal is zero waste but for most people this still isn’t possible – but that’s no reason not to try. There’s an expression in the zero waste world which fits this perfectly:

We don’t need a handful of people doing zero waste perfectly.
We need millions of people doing it imperfectly.

So come join the zero waste movement!

Why zero waste?

Put simply – it’s another way to reduce your environmental footprint.

Our waste takes years to break down (and plastic waste can take hundreds of years). It contributes to land and water pollution and landfill sites are major producers of greenhouse gas.

In other words, if you can avoid producing waste then do it!

How does Wefill help support a zero waste lifestyle?

A large part of what we throw in the garbage or recycling is food packaging and packaging from cleaning products and personal hygiene products.

Our products come in reusable packaging (which you return to the store) helping you reduce significantly the amount of waste you produce.

And hey presto! You’re already halfway to zero!

How does it work?

A common question we receive is “but what do I do with my products if they don’t have any packaging?”

It’s simple.

You store them in old jars or any other container. Note: It’s important that it’s sealed and clean.

We know it sounds like a lot of work, and initially it does take some time to get organized. However the result is a cleaner, tidier and more aesthetically pleasing larder. Definitely worth the effort.

For soaps and cleaning products, keep your old soap bottles, wash them and fill them with whatever you bought in the store. You can also buy reusable glass bottles but reusing what you have is a zero waste preference.

Wouldn’t it be better to buy special containers for food storage?

No.

One of the main principles of zero waste is reuse. So instead of buying new, use jars you already have (and we know you have loads!!).If you don’t have enough, ask friends\family\neighbours – trust us there’s no shortage of glass jars for reuse.

If you really don’t have enough jars we sell them in the store – but only as a last option.

Isn’t recycling enough?

According to zero waste principles we recycle only when there is no alternative.

Recycling uses energy and water and causes pollution so it’s much better to avoid producing the waste in the first place.

Where can I learn more?

There is loads of information available online and a quick google search can turn you into a zero waste expert (well almost). We will also post relevant information from time to time.

We find that the best place for practical zero waste information is Facebook groups.

Join  “אפס פסולת ישראל – zero waste Israel” and if there’s a group for your area join that too. There you’ll find someone with an answer to almost any question.

If you struggle with Hebrew there are lots of international groups….. they just won’t be able to help you with those day to day questions like “where’s the best second shop in my area” etc.

We’re really happy you’ve joined the zero waste movement! Good luck.
